In fact the track we've titled "Piano Salad" (5:43) was part of a 30-minute stream of consciousness set that never quite resolved itself, using each new bit of melodic material or each new rhythmic idea as a springboard for something else. It's almost disconcerting to listen to this, but this same attitude was more or less present in his music at all times, giving his sets a fluid structure that guaranteed you would never hear the same ideas two nights in a row.

It was the last of all times we went sailing on Lake Ponchartrain on Sunday afternoons. James was at the wheel, which he had correctly mistaken for a Steinway grand. His shirt was off and his chin was into the wind and he looked like a scrawny burnt chicken. And he turned to me and smiled the realest nongrimace, the truest of nonsmirks, the most loving of smiles, and he said... "I'm jamming with the wind, man. I'm jamming with the wind.
